How to Create a Study Plan for CAT & OMET Preparation in 5 Easy Steps

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of the most competitive entrance exams in India for admission to prestigious business schools. The exam requires a comprehensive study plan to cover all the topics and practice adequately to achieve a high percentile score. In this blog, we will discuss how to create a study plan for CAT preparation in 5 easy steps to help you achieve your desired score in CAT 2024.

Step 1. Know the Exam Pattern and Syllabus

exam pattern

The first step in creating a study plan for CAT preparation is to understand the exam pattern and syllabus. CAT comprises three sections - Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Each section has a time limit of 60 minutes, and the total duration of the exam is 180 minutes. Understanding the exam pattern and syllabus will help you identify your "strengths and weaknesses" and focus on areas that require more attention.

Step 2: Set Realistic Targets

Set realistic targets

Setting realistic targets is crucial to create a study plan that is achievable and effective. Set daily, weekly, and monthly targets for each section of the exam based on your strengths and weaknesses. Consider the time you have for preparation and your current level of preparation while setting targets. Ensure that your targets are challenging, yet achievable, to keep yourself motivated and on track.

Step 3: Allocate Time for Each Section

time allocation

Allocate enough time for each section of the exam, based on the weightage given to each section. For instance, VARC and QA have a weightage of 34% each, while DILR has a weightage of 32%. Allocate more time to sections with a higher weightage and less time to sections with a lower weightage. However, do not neglect any section as each section contributes to your overall score.

Step 4: Practice Regularly

practise

Practice is crucial to score well in CAT. Plan your preparation in such a way that you practice regularly. Solving previous years’ papers, mock tests, and sectional tests will help you improve your speed and accuracy. It will also help you identify the type of questions that appear frequently in the exam and how to solve them quickly.

Step 5: Evaluate Your Progress

evaluate progress

Evaluating your progress regularly is crucial to ensure that your study plan is effective. Take regular mock and sectional tests to assess your progress and identify areas needing more attention. Analyze your mistakes, learn from them, and work on improving your weak areas. Regular evaluation will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and keep you motivated.

Creating a study plan for CAT preparation can be overwhelming, but following the above five steps can make it easier and more effective. Knowing the exam pattern and syllabus, setting realistic targets, allocating time for each section, practising regularly, and evaluating your progress will help you adequately cover all the topics and practice. Additionally, maintain a healthy lifestyle, take breaks in between your study sessions, and stay motivated to achieve your target score in CAT 2024
