10 Ways to Improve Vocabulary for MBA Entrance Exams

Consider this statement:

"Just as the profuse blossoms of the insurgent William Morris now adorn aristocratic sofas, so the revolutionary aims among several folk histories and revivalists have resulted in music that is generally considered parochial and conservative."

The majority of first-time readers would be perplexed if you were to explain the meaning of the terms in bold to them. These are terms that are rarely heard today in everyday discourse. They did, however, make an appearance in one of the RCs during the CAT 2019 morning session (here is an example from one of the RCs). Even though CAT rarely asks directly about a word's meaning, it does occasionally inquire about the sentence's context.

Why, then, should you concentrate on increasing your vocabulary?

Some MBA colleges also include a WAT (Written Ability Test) as a requirement for admission, in addition to the fact that many tests either directly give you questions about the definition of words or require you to have a decent vocabulary for the RCs. "Your essays will spring to life and seem crisper if you have strong word skills".

In addition, you must submit a statement of purpose or an article for several universities other than the IIMs. This will also assist you in creating SOPs that seem more professional, polished, and effective when used in the admissions process. Finally, exploring beyond this will help you comprehend case studies better, create more beautiful reports, and significantly improve your presentations as an MBA student.

The process of creating a vocabulary takes time. You must do the necessary work to stay on top of this and, more importantly, understand when to use each tool.

*Here are some pointers to aid you in this quest to increase your vocabulary

01. Reading

study material

"The perfect word frequency list is reading books". Reading is beneficial because it enables vocabulary learning and reinforcement. You gain access to the most often used and practical words while also learning the vocabulary in context with other phrases that are pertinent.

02. Look up New terms

learn

You should look up new words every day and try to understand them.

03. Create a journal

Journal

Create a notepad or journal and try to write down any unfamiliar phrases. To remember them, you continually revise them.

04. Speak up

Communication

Speak up and use appropriate language in conversation. This will make you stand out from the crowd. You will gradually realize that you are communicating so fluently and some even using use positive words when you are in the interview chair. The panellists are frequently drawn to this.

05. Purchase a bilingual dictionary

Dictionary

When unfamiliar terms suddenly occur to you while you're going about your day, looking them up online is a good idea. If you come across any strange words in your daily life, you can also check them up in a dictionary or thesaurus.

06. Play games

Play Games

You don't have to learn everything from books. Playing games is a great way to learn as well. Unscramble and other word-based puzzle games are only a couple of the many board games available.

07. Reading Phrases and Idioms

Reading

Idioms seem to be particularly crucial since they let you express yourself in original and interesting ways. Instead of saying "You're right," you may say "You hit the nail on the head," which is a more complex and fascinating remark. The use of idioms may be quite humorous as they help you express yourself more honestly while also exhibiting your individuality and sense of humour.

08. Attempt to speak English

English speaking

Attempt to speak English as much as you can by surrounding yourself with English speakers. You might watch some VAIR videos on the website and gain knowledge from them. Study synonyms and antonyms as well – These words may aid in the expansion of your vocabulary.

09. Make a program for mastering

Planning

Make a program for mastering at least 5 new terms each day with their definitions and pronunciation if you start your preparation early. Strive to incorporate those 5 new terms into your conversations at least once per day. Improving vocabulary memory also benefits from incorporating newly learned terms into regular speech and writing.

10. Make your Vocabulary tests

Test

The words that you would have learned so far can be revisited or re-tested by your do-it-yourself tests. Make a list of words and then test yourself randomly, if you remember the meaning and correct usage of the word then it’s perfect!
