Several rankings and surveys (NIRF, India Today, Business Today, Financial Times) have ranked the IIMs as the top management institutes in India. They are also designated as Institutions of National Importance by the Government of India. In India, there are 20 IIMs that provide MBA, PGP, PGDM, Executive MBA, and Fellowship programmes. The top three IIMs have the most established campuses. In 1961, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta were founded. In 1973, IIM Bangalore was formed 12 years later. There were fourteen IIMs founded between 2008 and 2016.

IIM admissions involve an entrance exam, a written ability test (WAT), a group discussion (GD), and a personal interview (PI). For admission to IIM's flagship programme, PGP/MBA, CAT scores are allowed. Foreign applicants must take the GMAT. Candidates must take the CAT (or GMAT for international students) and then pass the WAT-GD-PI round to be considered for admission.
Candidates for Executive programmes are often chosen based on a written test developed by the institute, job experience, a Statement of Purpose, and other factors.
Programmes Offered by India's IIMs :- Postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education programmes are available at the IIMs.
MBA/PGP: The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the flagship programme across all IIMs, and considered the equivalent of regular MBA programmes. After the passage of IIM Act 2017, most IIMs have started offering Master in Business Administration (MBA) degrees. The IIMs are best known and rated for this two-year full-time MBA/PGP course.
EPGP: The Executive Post Graduate Programme or EPGP is offered by almost all the IIMs. This course is designed specifically for mid level professionals with 5-12 years of work experience.
IPM: Integrated Programme in Management or IPM is the five-year course after 12 offered by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu.
PGPX: For graduates with job experience, certain IIMs additionally offer a one-year post-graduate diploma degree.
FPM: Some IIMs offer the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), a doctoral programme that is widely regarded as comparable to a PhD.
Certificate Executive Programmes (Short Duration or Part Time): Most IIMs also provide short-duration executive education/EMBA courses as well as part-time certificate programmes.
Other Unique Programmes: Some IIMs, such as IIM Indore's Five Year Integrated Programme in Management and IIM Lucknow's three-year Working Managers' Programme, provide unique programmes.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree from a UGC-recognized university/college with at least 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA. The minimum needed percentage or CGPA for SC, ST, and Persons with Disabilities (PWD or DA) is 45%.
Candidates in their last year who are awaiting their results may also apply. At several phases of the CAT selection process, IIMs may verify eligibility.

According to NIRF ranking 2023, IIM Bangalore, founded in 1973, is the second-best management institute in India. The FT Global Rankings 2023 have placed its flagship MBA and EMBA program at number 52. Admission to the 2-year MBA program at IIM Bangalore is available via CAT. A public business school called the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta or IIM-C) is situated in Joka, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was the first Indian Institute of Management to be founded, and in 2017 the Indian government designated it as an Institute of National Importance. A two-year full-time MBA, a one-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma(PGPEX-VLM), a one-year full-time MBA for experienced executives(MBAEx), a doctoral program in business administration,
a two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics, and a one-year full-time programme in healthcare management are among the programs offered by IIM Calcutta. Only three Indian business schools have received triple accreditation, with IIM Calcutta being the first to do so. Additionally, it is the only business school in India that is a part of the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education.

An independent public business school called the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode is situated in Calicut, Kerala. One of the 20 Indian Institutes of Management, the institution was founded in 1996 by the Government of India in partnership with the State Government of Kerala. The IIM was the fifth to be founded.

An independent, public business school called the Indian Institute of Management Indore is situated in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India (commonly abbreviated as IIM-I). The sixth addition to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) family of management schools, IIM Indore was established in 1996 and joined the other IIMs in 2017 in receiving the designation of an institute of national importance. By receiving three international accreditations from the Association of MBAs (UK), The Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (USA), and EQUIS, European Union, it has achieved Triple Accreditation.

In the Meghalayan city of Shillong, the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong or IIM-S) is a public, totally autonomous management institute. It was India's eighth Indian Institute of Management to open its doors. IIM Shillong, established in 2007, provides postgraduate, doctoral, and executive programs in management education as well as Management Development Programmes (MDPs) encompassing many management streams.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) scores, as well as the results of the group discussion and personal interview rounds, are used to determine admission to the institute. The institute also has a Center for Development of North Eastern Region (CEDNER), which was established to provide programs pertinent to the local community and society of the state and region.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are made up of 19 colleges, with six new IIMs being selected in 2015. As a result, CAT applicants in India now have a plethora of possibilities. The new IIMs are located in Visakhapatnam, Bihar, Bodh Gaya, Himachal Pradesh, Nagpur, Maharashtra, Sambalpur, Odisha, and Amritsar, Punjab.
These new IIMs in India have begun an intake of 140 students each for postgraduate courses, with admissions via the CAT entrance exam. For the first few years, the top 13 IIMs will be monitoring and mentoring these six new IIMs.

This new IIM in Odisha began the admission process for the first batch of 2015-17 under the supervision of IIM Indore. This is temporarily housed on the campus of Silicon Institute of Technology in Sambalpur. IIM Sambalpur charges a two-year tuition cost of 10 lakhs.

In 2015, IIM Visakhapatnam (also known as IIM Vizag) launched their first batch of Post Graduate Programme in Management under the tutelage of IIM Bangalore. This is located on the Andhra University campus, in the Andhra Bank School of Business. IIM Vizag's initial batch strength is 60.

In August 2015, IIM Gaya launched its first batch of Post Graduate Programme in Management under the guidance of IIM Calcutta. This is situated on 118 acres of land at the Magadh University Campus in Bihar. The HRD Minister renamed IIM Bihar IIM Bodh Gaya.

Among the new IIMs, IIM Amritsar is the 15th IIM, founded in 2015 by the Human Resources Development Ministry and with the assistance of the Government of Punjab. IIM Kozhikode will oversee all activities at IIM Amritsar until it establishes a permanent campus. IIM Amritsar is now housed on the campus of the Government Polytechnic College Amritsar.

On July 23, 2015, IIM Nagpur, one of the six new IIMs, began their first batch of Post Graduate Programme in Management students. In 2015, IIM Sirmaur began the first batch of PGP in Management under the leadership and mentorship of IIM Lucknow. The first batch strength was 60 (2015-17 batch). It is currently housed at the Himachal Institute of Technology in Paonta Sahib, District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh.
